ABOUT BERKELEY SYMPHONY, THE BAY AREA’S ORCHESTRA

OUR STORY

bay area classical musicFounded by Thomas Rarick in 1971, Berkeley Symphony has become an integral part of the Bay Area classical music scene. Our orchestra, known for its blend of classical and contemporary music, has grown into a respected institution that both honors its roots and embraces innovation.

Starting in 1978, Berkeley Symphony
gained an international reputation for its adventurous programming, becoming known for premiering the music of international composers and showcasing young local talents.

We’ve continued to make history in the intervening years, welcoming Joana Carneiro, our third Music Director in 2009, and the renowned Joseph Young in 2018. Today, Maestro Young continues to build our legacy of innovative programming, award-winning educational programs stewarded by Education Director Ming Luke, and extensive community engagement efforts, such as Students at the Symphony.

OUR MISSION AND VISION

bay area classical musicBerkeley Symphony celebrates our unique and diverse community through music – creating live performances and educational programs to engage the curiosity, spirit, and intellect of our audiences.

Inspired by our home city’s long-standing legacy of innovation and inclusion, Berkeley Symphony presents unique and accessible musical experiences that respond to the shifting needs of our community. We believe that music is a living art form that must resonate with the cultural demands of our time and place. By courageously exploring diverse avenues of music and education, we create a greater sense of belonging.

SUPPORTING THE BAY AREA’S NEXT GENERATION OF MUSICAL COMMUNITY

bay area classical musicBerkeley Symphony is excited to offer K-12 students the chance to experience our Symphonic Series Concerts for free! We believe in nurturing a love for the arts in the next generation, and what better way to do this than by inviting young people to immerse themselves in the world of symphonic music?

Through our ongoing collaboration with Berkeley schools via the Music in the Schools program and our partnerships with youth-focused community organizations, we’re opening the doors to our concerts at no cost to students. It’s a unique opportunity for them to witness the magic of live orchestral performances.

We also welcome adults accompanying students, as well as K-12 school administrators and teachers, to join us for a special ticket price of just $15 each.
