About
Born in Mexico City in 1974, Enrico Chapela is quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting young talents to emerge from Latin America with a growing number of international performances and commissions. His music fuses elements of jazz, rock, and Latin-American tradition with western classical idioms, and has been performed by Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, Percussion Group Cincinnati, and the Arditti String Quartet, among others.
Enrico Chapela received his undergraduate degree in guitar performance from the Centro de Investigación y Estudios de la Música (CIEM) in Mexico City and master’s degree in electro-acoustic music at the University of Paris Saint-Denis. Since 2002, several of his works have received national and international recognitions, including winning the first prize at the Alexander Zemlinsky International Composition Competition. His most recent work, Private Alleles, an orchestral tribute to the unique genome makeup of Mexican Mestizo and Amerindian populations, was commissioned and premiered by Berkeley Symphony in December 2010. His new concerto for electric cello, Magnetar, is scheduled to be premiered by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and cellist Johannes Moser in fall 2011. Enrico Chapela is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Paris Saint-Denis and a 2010-11 Guggenheim Fellow.
